Bloom Credit CEO Christian Widhalm has been named a finalist for the 2026 Credit Union Times Luminaries Awards. He is recognized in the Executive Leadership Individual, Technology Vendor category.

The Luminaries Awards honor individuals and organizations driving innovation and impact across the credit union industry.

A Story Rooted in Credit Access

Christian’s connection to Bloom Credit goes back further than his title suggests. Long before he became CEO, he worked alongside Bloom Credit founder Matt Harris at LendKey, where Christian served as Chief Revenue Officer. Matt would talk through ideas for improving how consumers access credit, ideas that eventually became Bloom Credit.

Christian helped shape some of that early thinking, including the company name itself. He watched from the sidelines as Bloom Credit grew, admiring the progress but holding off on joining. The timing was not right.

A few years later, in July 2021, Matt asked him to join for real. This time, Christian said yes.

He came to Bloom Credit with a clear view of the problem worth solving. Credit bureaus play a vital role in the economy, but getting access to their data has historically taken companies 12 to 18 months. Bloom Credit built the infrastructure to make that access faster and more efficient, without sacrificing the due diligence bureaus require.

A Vision for Credit Building Without New Debt

Since taking the helm, Christian has led Bloom Credit through its next chapter, one focused on the consumers behind the data. Under his leadership, the company built Bloom+, a solution that helps credit unions and banks report consumer-permissioned payment data, including rent, utilities, and Telecom, to credit bureaus.

The result gives account holders a path to build credit history through payments they are already making. No new debt required.

Measurable Impact for Account Holders and Institutions

Bloom+ has produced results that speak for themselves:

  • Thin-file and no-file consumers enrolling in Bloom+ start with an average initial credit score of 657, moving them from credit invisible to bankable
  • Enrollees see a 16 to 23 point credit score increase, beginning within 72 hours of enrollment
  • 61% of enrolled members get a new loan within 90 days of enrollment
  • Enrollees show a 31% increase in bill payment activity
  • Participating institutions see 13% growth in deposit balances
  • Retention among enrolled members exceeds 98%

Recognition Built on Momentum

This nomination adds to a year of recognition for Bloom Credit, including the Fintech Breakthrough Banking Infrastructure Software of the Year award.

Christian remains active with the Financial Health Network and the American Fintech Council, contributing to broader industry conversations on credit access and financial inclusion. The same conviction that drew him to Bloom Credit in the first place, that access to credit should be more open and more equitable, continues to guide the company’s work today.

Congratulations to Christian on this well-earned recognition. The full list of 2026 Luminaries finalists is available on CUTimes.com.
